Lou Gehrig, the self proclaimed "luckiest man on the face of the earth," played an astonishing 2130 consecutive baseball games before his career was cut short by amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The Iron Horse, as he was called, was only 37 years old when he ultimately succumbed to the relentless disease.
